A visit to the heart of volcanoes
If the volcanoes represent a certain danger, they are nonetheless an immense opportunity for New Zealand in particular with regard to geothermal and tourism (spas, beautiful scenery, geysers and bubbling lakes, etc.).. The Rotorua-Taupo region in the North Island, has been the site of one of the largest volcanic explosion of all time: that of Taupo in 130 AD which projected into the air 5 times more ash than that of Krakatoa in 1883 and which now forms a lake 600 km ².
We were spent in this area last winter, but a sea of clouds covered everything and there was too much snow for hiking . So we decided to come back this summer just before leaving, what is done!
We left three days walk to the heart Ruhapehu volcanoes, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro (sorry for spelling!).
course, starting in the middle of summer it was to be expected that we are not alone on this journey, but from there to queue up at each, it was scary! I must say that everyone is waiting for good weather to begin the ascent.
Once at the top, we can choose to mount the top of Ngaruhoe (the perfect conical volcano) but then it takes a day from 9 am walk with 800m of elevation gain in 2 hours. We did not book for our forces to the following days!
We pass next to the red crater and then back down to turquoise lakes surrounded gazs sulfurous vents that release that famous scent of rotten egg. The landscape is totally lunar!
We stopped near the first refuge of large sulfur springs that we embalm this delicate scent throughout the night. Then we get up at 6am to enjoy the sunrise and a little solitude.
Seen from above, we 'feel dominate the world but especially to be instead of two little hobbits to face the dangers of Mordor. The lava flows that stretch before us recall some moments from the movie! Fortunately, there are many fewer people on this part of the road.
It winds through a landscape worthy of another planet. The flora is very special with the 'herb sheep "who stand out on the volcanic rocks. We walk on carpets of ultralight pumice stones before starting the journey of a small desert.
They reached the second hut in the middle of the afternoon so we decided to continue the road and sleep in the road where we found a place sheltered from the wind. The day is a bit long with 8 hours of walking we decided to stop before getting hurt in the joints. Night under the stars is one mile and a bit damp. Fortunately, volcanoes have taken wise overnight.
we go again for the last part of the journey. We must be at Maggie and John the same night at 500 miles away so no time to hang out on the road, found the car in the parking lot and on file, although dirty and tired.
This hike was the last of our trip to New Zealand. During our journey to Auckland, where we take the plane, we take the opportunity to go say goodbye to friends we had met al'aller.
